Oxon CE Primary School

Year 3

The curriculum covers the areas of spoken language, reading (word reading and comprehension), writing-transcription (spelling and handwriting), and writing-composition (vocabulary, grammar and punctuation).

The children study a range of texts in our fiction, non-fiction and poetry units. These include stories with familiar settings, myths and legends, shape and performance poetry, report writing, adventure stories, instruction writing, authors and letters, information texts and narrative dialogue and plays. Writing skills are further developed by focusing on a variety of sentence structures; use of dialogue; organisation of ideas into paragraphs; and correct use of appropriate punctuation. The children also work on word classes, word families, nouns, use of conjunctions and present perfect forms of verbs. The children write for a variety of audiences and purposes. Reading skills are further developed through shared and guided reading and comprehension activities.  Spoken language is developed throughout the year using a range of activities.
