Oxon CE Primary School

Year 5

The curriculum covers the areas of spoken language, reading (word reading and comprehension), writing-transcription (spelling and handwriting), and writing-composition (vocabulary, grammar and punctuation).

The children study a range of texts in our fiction, non-fiction and poetry units. These include stories by significant authors, traditional stories and stories from other cultures; instructions, reports and dramatic conventions; choral and performance poetry, and classic poetry. In writing, children are taught the skills involved in planning, drafting and writing; evaluating and editing; and proofreading work. They write for a variety of audiences and purposes. Their use of language and punctuation is extended through learning to use, for example, multi-clausal sentences, expanded noun phrases, and parenthesis. In reading, skills are further developed through shared and guided reading, and comprehension activities.  Spoken language is developed throughout the year using a range of activities.
