This year the children develop their ability to ‘work scientifically’ through a range of simple enquiries.
Focus areas: ‘Animals including Humans’, ‘Living things and their habitats’, ‘Plants’ and ‘Everyday Materials’.
During our topic on ‘Animals including Humans’, the children describe the basic needs of animals and describe the importance of exercise, health and hygiene for humans. Our unit of ‘Living things and their habitats’, includes identifying a range of habitats and describing simple food chains. During our topic on ‘Everyday Materials’, children compare the suitability of a variety of materials for different purposes and explore how some solids can change shape. Our unit on ‘Plants’ includes observing and describing how seeds and bulbs grow into mature plants and explaining what plants need to grow. Science in Year 2 is supported with a visit to Think Tank.
