Year 6
Focus area: Why was the building of Shrewsbury flax mill a significant turning point in history? Would you rather have been part of the Ancient Egyptian civilization or the Maya civilization?
During history sessions, the children continue to develop an understanding of the past using a range of sources and artefacts. Children study buildings in Shrewsbury as an aspect of British history to extend their chronological knowledge. They develop independent research skills, noting connections contrasts and trends over time, whilst developing their use of historical terms. The children study the Ditherington Flaxmill in detail to support cross curricular Design Technology work, which involves a visit to the site. Year 6 children also study the Mayan civilisation, a non-European society that provides a contrast to British history. They will examine different interpretations of the Mayan way of life from available evidence and look at the causes for the collapse of this civilisation.
